Bach in Brazil

Hello again.

Well, this is kind of an obscure cd, it was released 5 years ago, but still is one of my best cd's, or was, my ex not only broke my *cough*heart*cough*, but also never returned my best cd. Had to get a copy :(.
Anyway, this is one of those masterpieces that can uplift our spirit. From the 3 classical monsters, Bach is my favourite, and joinning that with brazilian choro, powerfull. It has some other pieces as well, from the timeless pixinguinha to Radamés Gnattali all in a equatorian mood. This is another Must hear cd, take a look here. Another one that lies in my collection is The Rite of Strings, with Al Di Meola, Jean-Luc Ponty and Stanley Clarke, guitar, violin and bass virtuosos. Perfect.

Hurricanes

Once hurricane Wilma goes away, the National weather service will run out of female names and start with the Greek alphabet. In 1953, the National Weather Service picked up on the habit of Naval meteorologists of naming the storms after women. Ships were always referred to as female, and were often given women's names. The storms' temperament certainly seemed female enough, shifting directions at a whim on a moment's notice. (not my words, as I don't think women shift thinking directions, EVER)

Anyway, one of these days on a convo with a friend on msn I was trying to made a funny and asked him if he knew why hurricanes were named after women, his answer was so funny that I lost my puch line and was laughing instead. So here it goes:

me: do you know why all tornados are named after women?

him: when they come to you they are warm and wet
when they go they take away your car and house

ps. - edited cos I found out I just made a Greel alphabet, typo. (the one I found, I may suck in grammar also. You all know english is not my first language, oddly enough portuguese doesn't seem to be it either, hehe)

Katie Melua - Piece by Piece

Katie Melua's second album has been released, "Piece by Piece" the much awaited album after the multi-million selling "Call of the search", at a first glance it doesn't have the surprising effect the first one had, so we get a feeling of more of the same. But don't get me wrong, this album is a must hear, Katie has a tremendous voice, with her fragile looks that make us think that she will not gona make it. Bluesy, jazzy, but not as strong as the first album, in my personnal opinion Mike Batt (producer, arranger, watever) doesn't have the genious for it.

After reading some reviews, from the both sides of the spectre: "...it really should be illegal for anyone to even think of covering "Blues in the night"..." (Trevor Lord, BBC), of course trashed by some hard core fans.

I for once woulnd't bother to fall asleep with Katie singing at my ear "Just Like Heaven", The Cure cover, with her sweet, sexy, angelic voice. But, Hey, I'm a guy, and dammit, she's only 20 ;)

Dig it on your local cd store and enjoy it.

Sin City

Not commenting on Frank Miller's graphic novels, as I never read them, but the cinematic version of the BD is an amassing bump of killin, decapitation and cannibalism, that after a few minutes of enjoying the artsy looks of the blach&white with flashes of color, it leaves with an orgy of blood and violence, which by itself might be appealing for gore fans but I find that it lacks the depth to keep me focused on following the story, if there is hardly one.

3 out of 10 stars.

the things that I prize, like the stars in the skies, are all free

Oh, I got plenty o' nuttin'
And nuttin's plenty for me
I got no car, got no mule
I got no misery

I got no lock on de door
Dat's no way to be
Dey kin steal de rug from de floor
Dat's okeh wid me
'Cause de things dat I prize
Like de stars in de skies
All are free

Oh, I got plenty o' nuttin'
And nuttin's plenty for me
I got the sun, got the moon
Got the deep blue sea

I ain't frettin 'bout hell
'Till de time arrive
Never worry long as I'm well
Never one to strive
To be good, to be bad
What the hell
I is glad I's alive

I got plenty o' nottin

Politics - just shoot me, please

Like is common knowledge, Portugal is not the most developded country. As many think it's a good thing, I find it appaling. I don't like tradition, I feel society must evolve and not stick to old costumes, while sometimes they can be fun, specially if it comes to food and beverage, I get steam out of my head to figure how "the powers that be" can pass a law that allows for something like a barbarian slaughter of bulls just because it's "tradition", while it is already against the law to do it anywhere in the country, but that's just me, seems everyone is fine with it.

But the thing that troubles my mind today is the Municipal elections. As I spoken before, I hate politicians, well, not really hate, that would be such a waste of emotions, and they don't deserve that. They're just a modern gang of blood-leecher thugs. (of course with some, few exceptions)
Bush got re-election, Washington DC has already re-elected a crack head mayor, and in that tradition polls tell me that we're about to re-elect a mayor that had an arrest warrant and flew out to Brasil. How can someone in their perfect mind go and vote on such a person is beyond my wildest imagination.

Just to end this, I learned today that if someone is in an election list not only he has a 15 day holliday for campaign, also gets immunity. Priceless.
